I have spent nearly 25 years in the natural products industry, and during that time, I’ve often been asked for tips and tricks about natural products. Recently, I took some of my holiday time to compile this information. While I wouldn’t recommend this task compared to others, I wanted to share it with you. The Basics:
Test First
Natural products often have a soft and gentle image, but that can be misleading. Many natural ingredients are, in fact, quite powerful. In reality, most pharmaceuticals are derived from synthesized natural ingredients. Each ingredient is usually potent, and humans frequently come into contact with various natural oils, herbs, and concoctions. Therefore, it’s important to test first.
Ironically, the best place to conduct a patch test is on the inside of your elbow. This area has soft tissue that reacts similarly to the skin around the eyes. Apply a small amount of any natural product, not just Keys®, to this area to check for any reactions.
Start Slow
For example, let’s consider lotions. I always recommend applying a new lotion on wet skin. After washing your face, leave it damp and apply a small amount of lotion to that wet skin. Spread it out thinly and add more as needed. Allow it to dry naturally. This method will help distribute the lotion evenly. Continue to add more until you reach the desired amount. You’ll know when you’ve used too much.
Less is More
Less is more when it comes to natural ingredients. Most chemical-based skin and haircare products rely on heavy use. However, natural products are different; using less is often more effective. You will come to understand this.
Shampoo Twice
Natural haircare products do not contain surfactants if they are truly natural. Surfactants were developed by the Germans during World War II to remove grease from tanks after they were shipped across the high seas. Yes, that means you’re applying substances like Sodium Laureth Sulfate to your hair and scalp when you see it on the label.
As a result, natural shampoos may seem less effective and do not produce much lather during the first wash because they need to break down the ionic barrier on your hair before they can really clean it. It’s usually during the second shampoo that you’ll notice more suds and effective cleaning.
