What A Hoot – Grace and Frankie, and Eye Butter?
Over the months of the last season for Grace and Frankie, we have had numerous inquiries asking if the Eye Butter referred to in Season 7 of Grace and Frankie is Keys® Eye Butter.
First, for the non-followers of the show, Grace and Frankie is an American comedy television series aired by Netflix. The series stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as the eponymous Grace Hanson and Frankie Bergstein, two aging women who form an unlikely friendship after their husbands reveal they are in love with each other and plan to get married. Throughout season 7 of the show, Grace’s skin care company reference Eye Butter as their new planned breakout product. No surprise, people have asked, “Is that Keys Eye Butter?” Very recently, someone asked if we could give them the website for that Eye Butter, thinking we privately labeled it for the show.
The straight-up answer is, “We have no clue.”
Grace and Frankie a Coincidence?
Some Grace and Frankie coincidences are leading us to question whether there is a connection or not. So, here are some things we know for sure.
Some 17 years ago, the Environmental Working Group asked us to show off a product for 150+ Hollywood makeup artists at the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica, California. The problem was that we did not have a product that fit the event, so Bob invented Eye Butter. In his misspent youth, Bob was involved with Hollywood both in front and behind the camera from a technology perspective. He hung out with actresses that would build a concoction that included fresh cucumbers with exotic kinds of butter and oils to fix their tired eyes after partying all night. Fast forward to about 18 years ago, he devised a way to distill fresh cucumber and use the finest oil and Shea Butter to create a product that was an immediate hit with makeup artists. A hit with the makeup artists means a hit with actors who found Keys® Eye Butter not only natural but better than the best eye creams they could find. Many famous actors bought and continue to use Keys® Eye Butter to this day. Eye Butter has been featured in the makeup trailers of many movies and TV shows as well as tons of commercials. Some shows like Weeds even featured Keys® products on camera in episodes. So, there could be a connection to Grace and Frankie, but we do not know.
Along comes Maria Shriver’s California Women’s Conferences while she was First Lady of California and Arnold was Governor. Maria invited Keys® to attend as both exhibitors and to supply products for the 160+ celebrity speakers. You guessed it; Jane Fonda was one of those speakers who received Keys® Eye Butter in her gift basket. In fact, I received a voicemail from Maria thanking me for participating, which ultimately caused us to add the term Pure to our company profile. Maria said, “Keys® is so Pure…..” That is why our website is www.KeysPure.com. Coincidence? Maybe and maybe not.
Many actors have requested that their makeup artists have Keys® in their makeup trailers. We have received notes from actors thanking us, and we also received cryptic messages telling us about sightings of Keys® products in certain shopping baskets. We have rendezvoused with makeup artists to hand over Eye Butter to rush before the red carpet. Can’t name names, but you can Google some Keys® history.
So, the truth is, we don’t know if there is a connection or not. I am half tempted to go on Jane’s blog and ask her directly, but as a spokesperson for Loreal, it probably is fruitless.
Anyhow, if you have not tried Eye Butter, it is and has been a Keys® bestseller for nearly 18 years and is unchanged from the original formula.
